Personal songs with room to grow

Codyy, professionally styled as CODYY, is an Irish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Waterford whose music brings together alternative pop, indie rock and electronic touches. Born Andrew Cody, he approaches songwriting with the experience of someone who has spent years playing instruments, working in bands and learning how a song develops from an early idea into a finished recording. His music combines personal subjects with an accessible pop sensibility, giving him room to explore uncertainty, ambition and hope through songs intended to connect with a broad audience.

Music was part of Codyy’s surroundings from childhood. Growing up in a family of working musicians meant that performing was something he encountered at close range. His early interest in piano developed into playing guitar and bass, singing, and eventually recording and production. That range of experience matters because his involvement extends beyond writing a melody or delivering a vocal. He understands how different instrumental parts work together and how an arrangement can support the feeling of a song. His background gives him several ways to develop an idea, whether it begins with a chord progression, a vocal phrase or something discovered while recording.

Although Waterford is where his story began, Mullingar became an important part of his musical development. He moved there to join Fallen Lights, gaining experience in a band before building his solo identity. He has spoken warmly about the town’s music community and the combination of encouragement and healthy competition among its musicians. That environment offered opportunities to learn alongside other performers and helped establish connections that continued into his solo work. His route into releasing music under his own name was therefore a gradual one, shaped by collaboration, practice and time spent finding a direction.

His musical influences are broader than a straightforward indie-pop label might suggest. In an interview with RTÉ, he described a foundation in rock and rap from the 1990s and 2000s, alongside an interest in R&B. Those influences help explain the scope of his approach: there is space for the directness of a pop song, the momentum of a band performance and the additional possibilities of electronic production. Rather than belonging entirely to one tradition, Codyy works where those styles overlap, with melody providing a consistent point of focus.

His debut solo single, “Time 2 Be,” released in 2023, introduced a more reflective side to that sound. The song grew out of questions about purpose and the habit of looking outside ourselves for answers. Its subject is personal, but the underlying uncertainty is widely recognisable: wanting to move forward while still trying to understand what matters. Codyy developed much of the recording himself before working with producer Tom Leach in London. He had already written a substantial collection of material, but this was the song he felt should introduce his solo project. Its release marked the point when private writing and preparation became something listeners could finally share.

His explanation of the writing process also reveals how strongly he responds to melody. In an interview with InMusic, he discussed the unexpected feeling of nostalgia he experienced while developing “Time 2 Be,” and how hearing the recording take shape helped convince him it should be his first release. He has also described piano as central to his understanding of chords and playing different instruments as an education in arranging. These details suggest a songwriter who pays attention to the emotional effect of musical choices. A song’s meaning can come through the movement of its chords and melody as much as through the literal story of its words.

The follow-up, “Darkest Winter,” released in November 2023, explored more difficult emotional territory. Written from experiences connected to his teenage years and the mental health struggles he witnessed around him, the self-produced song considers how people find hope during periods of distress. Its ballad setting gives that subject space, with the vocal and harmonies carrying much of the expression. Within his early releases, it established that his songwriting could accommodate vulnerability as well as forward motion. The desire to make approachable pop music sits alongside a willingness to address experiences that are complicated and painful.

“Darkest Winter” also became part of a memorable public performance when Codyy joined the Camden Voices choir at a London train station. Reported in December 2024, the performance placed a song he had produced himself into a shared, public setting. The occasion provides a useful glimpse of how his work can move beyond its original recording: a personal piece of writing becomes something other voices can participate in. By that stage, he had moved to London to pursue further opportunities while maintaining connections with the Irish live scene.

Live performance is another substantial part of his development. His support appearances have included Gavin James, Moncrieff and The Coronas, bringing his music to audiences already familiar with established Irish songwriters and bands. His own UK and Ireland touring has included a headline date at Whelan’s Upstairs in Dublin on 11 April 2026. These appearances represent an important part of an emerging artist’s work: introducing songs to unfamiliar listeners, developing a set and gradually building an audience that returns specifically to hear him.

With a growing catalogue that also includes “White Lightning,” “No Flashlight” and “Quarter To Midnight,” Codyy is developing a body of work around the skills he has accumulated as a writer, instrumentalist and performer. His appeal lies in that combination of musical ambition and personal investment. There is an interest in reaching people through clear melodies and energetic performances, supported by writing that asks questions about identity, resilience and direction. For listeners discovering him, his early singles offer an introduction to an Irish artist steadily turning years of preparation into a recognisable solo voice.
